About
The Kansas African American Museum (TKAAM) in Wichita is a cultural cornerstone housed in the historic Calvary Baptist Church, a building saved from demolition by community activists in the 1970s. It preserves African American history through artifacts, exhibits, and storytelling, with a focus on four pillars: arts, heritage, education, and community culture. Unique for its origins as a church central to Wichita’s Black community, the museum itself is considered one of its largest artifacts, standing as one of the few remaining structures from the early 20th-century African American neighborhood. Its collections and programs highlight the resilience and contributions of Black Kansans, offering immersive insights into local and national narratives.
